WESTERN DIGITAL FD1791-AL

The invention of semiconductors and from them integrated circuits (IC's - chip's) has revolutionised the way we the human race exists.

This section of our shop is dedicated to the growing interest in collecting nice examples of early, interesting and genuinely pieces. People have been collecting these technological marvels for years already, only lately has it become truly evident that it is a real investment opportunity that offers great growth potential; doubtless in 10 - 15 years time as these collectible parts become more and more sought after, prices will have increased 10 fold. Examples by the technology manufacturing pioneers of our time will be the treasure of the future....

Manufactured by Western Digital in Malaysia in 1985, the FD1791-AL  was the first floppy disk controller chip that handled double density (thats 720Kb !) floppy disks.

720 KiloByte, today Western Digital make a 25 TeraByte drive, a TeraByte is equal to one thousand million kilobytes !!!  thats 9 zeros !  That is how far this company has pioneered magnetic storage, and this chip offered here, was there at the very beginning. Amazing actually.

The suffix 'L'at the end of the part number also details that the part was manufactured to military and avionic specs, so this technology would have been present in 1980's military and aeronautical equipment.

We cannot find another example offered for sale anywhere, let alone a new one. The die (the actual chip inside) was actually manufactured in week 20 of 1984, these finished military spec chips were then assembled and tested to order.

In a purple ceramic and heavily gold plated 40 pin DIL package, this attractive and historic chip is new and unused; this is a museum grade item, a must for serious collectors.

 Supplied in antistatic protective packaging.

Photos are of the actual item for sale.
