Transistors, a basic building block of all electronic circuits, are basically just a switch. Available in N-P-N and P-N-P characteristic and in many different sizes and packages depending on their intended application. Germanium transistors are not widely used anymore, they are have a lower volt drop than silicon and exhibit a 'noise' characteristics which is often appealing to guitar effect pedal makers and audio enthusiasts.
